FREE Seminar on Reversing Heart Disease 2/9

January 29, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Note from Native Sun Owner, Aaron Gottlieb . . .

I was introduced to Dr. Frank Lord through my father and the crisis he was having with his own heart care.  My Father was going into surgery and within 15 minutes the doctor came out into the waiting room and informed my family that my father’s life depended on him changing his diet.  He mentioned Dean Ornish and his research and said this was a difficult program to stick to, but provided the only change to “reverse” heart disease.

I was familiar with the diet and had carried the Ornish line of foods in the 1990s.  My father and mother read the books and decided to see if there was a clinic that helped teach the lifestyle.  From that they found Wellspring Clinic in Oregon. My parents’ life was changed from what they learned at the clinic. Lifestyle changes in relaxation and diet had brought me a new father.

My father has seen many benefits from his changes such as no chest pain and new blood vessels being formed that help “bypass” blood to get to the heart. Dr. Lord was the physician in charge and had become friendly with my parents. He was coming to Jacksonville to meet with them and personal friends to discuss how lifestyle changes such as diet can help prevent heart disease and problems. I informed my father that I wanted to speak with Dr. Lord to see if he matched Native Sun’s philosophies. He was such a pleasure to speak to and his knowledge about this lifestyle was so impressive that I was excited and honored if he would speak at Native Sun. After hearing our standards and processes he also felt the same.

Based on what I have witnessed with my father and family and the conversation I had with Dr. Lord, I couldn’t be more excited to have him added on to our lecture series.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in America. The CDC estimated that in 2009, heart disease cost the United States $304.6 billion in health care services, medications, and lost productivity. Join us for a FREE Seminar on Reversing Heart Disease with Dr. Frank Lord on Tuesday, February 9 at 8pm at our Baymeadows store.

Dr. Lord is Medical Director for the Silverton Hospital Network and Director of Wellspring Heart, a revolutionary program that enlists nutrition, exercise, stress reduction and group support to reverse heart disease. The program is based on the published research studies of Dean Ornish, MD, who was able to show reversal of coronary atherosclerosis in patients after just one year of treatment without costly, invasive procedures.

Dr. Lord joined Silverton in 1974 and worked in Family medicine for 18 years. In 1992 he took on the directorship of the Emergency Department at Silverton and worked there as an ER physician until January of 2008. He owns and operates a wholesale nursery with his son and is interested in sculpting and running. He lives outside Silverton with his wife, Shari and enjoys his four children and eight grandchildren.

Sarah Fronza, MS, RD, Dietician for Wellspring, will be at Native Sun as well. Sarah is a registered dietitian with more than 10 years experience. She graduated from Purdue University with B.S. in Dietetics and a M.S. in Human Nutrition, with an emphasis in instructional design. She has developed numerous nutrition education curricula, including the award winning food safety program, Safe Food & You and Diabetes Action!, a guide for children with type 1 diabetes and their families. Sarah is extremely passionate about experiential nutrition education and is delighted to work with individuals and families to reduce chronic disease and improve overall health.

In this lecture, attendees will . . .

• Learn how your heart can be older (or younger) than your actual age
• Discover what functional age means – How old are you really?
• Learn about new CT technology that allows you to see inside your own arteries
• Discover how to reverse existing heart disease without surgery or medication

Seating is limited and reservations are required by calling 904-260-2791.

Baymeadows Employee Weight Loss Challenge!

January 21, 2010 · 1 Comment

January is a month for making resolutions to help you be a better you in the coming year. For most Americans, the resolution to “Lose Weight” is usually in the Top 5 along with spend more time with family, quit smoking, reduce stress and get out of debt. It’s also said that one of the best ways to keep a resolution is to make it public, so several of us who had resolved to lose weight in 2010 started a Baymeadows Employee Weight Loss Challenge! The goal of working as a group is to keep ourselves accountable and support each other in our efforts.

The Challenge started on January 11 and ends on February 8 after a total of four weeks. We must use at least one PGX product each day (see below), keep a food journal and weigh in every Monday. Exercise is encouraged but not mandatory. Owner Aaron Gottlieb, a triathlete himself, started a beginners running club for employees that a few of us have joined! Winners will be based on percentage of weight lost, not total pounds lost. Prizes include a 3-month supply PGX products & dinner at the winners’ restaurant of choice with Ed Graham of Natural Factors. Wish us luck!

WHAT IS PGX?
PGX is the most powerful fiber in the world for weight loss, appetite regulation and blood sugar control. You would have to eat 4 bowls of oat bran cereal to achieve the same level of viscosity produced by 6 soft gels of PGX Ultra Matrix! PGX is said to “change your life, even if you don’t.”

The name PGX® is short for PolyGlycopleX®, a unique combination of water soluble plant fibers. Used before or with a meal, PGX absorbs many times its weight in water within the digestive system. This action helps to reduce meal portion size because you feel fuller, faster. Taking PGX with meals also slows the absorption of carbohydrates which means that sugar (glucose) is released into your bloodstream more gradually, helping you to maintain healthy blood sugar levels and reduce appetite.

PGX . . .
- Is scientifically based and clinically proven
- Helps reduce appetite and promotes effective weight loss
- Supports healthy blood sugar levels already within a normal range
- Reduces the glycemic index of any food or beverage by 35-70%
- Lowers blood cholesterol and triglycerides
- Is safe and stimulant free

Listen to PGX users and Dr. Lyons, co-author of Hunger Free Forever:

HOW DO I USE PGX?
PGX comes in several different forms, choose the one that fits your lifestyle.

PGX Daily Softgels (ON SALE THIS MONTH $35.99/120 softgels)
These are the most rapidly dispersed PGX product. Great for everyone, but especially for those always on the go – PGX Daily can be taken easily while at work, out for dinner or anywhere you go. Start with 1-2 softgels before each meal and slowly build up to the recommended dose of 3-6 softgels per meal. Take with 8oz of water about one hour before you eat.

PGX Powder Shakes (ON SALE THIS MONTH $33.49/1lb,12oz)
A great way to start your day! Available in several delicious flavors, the SlimStyles PGX powder shakes are great for breakfast and/or lunch each day and help you feel full and satisfied. PGX powder shakes are naturally flavored, can be allowed to stand until they become a pudding-like snack, or even be baked into muffins and breads. **Try Chocolate SlimStyles with Chocolate Almond Milk OR French Vanilla Slimstyles with Vanilla Almond Milk & Mixed Berries.**

PGX Granules
These unflavored granules dissolve and mix easily. Sprinkle them on any moist food (ceral, soups, sauces, even salads or pizza!) and eat as you normally would – you’ll feel fuller after eating less. Remember to drink PLENTY of water to ensure the PGX has enough moisture to expand and do its job.

For more information, visit PGX.com or ask one of our Nutrition employees.

A strong floral and citrus character from generous dryhopping blends with strawberry esters from our house yeast strain for an inviting and satiating aroma. From grain to glass, our beers are fresh, pure, and organically certified to the highest standards.

2010: The Year of Eating Organically, by OCA

January 4, 2010 · Leave a Comment

On December 30, 2009 the Organic Consumer Association sent out their Organic Bytes newsletter #206 titled “2010 – The Year of Eating Organically”. When making your resolutions to live better in 2010, consider the information below if not for your own health, for the health of your family, the environment, animal welfare and the planet.

Organic Food is More Nutritious
Organic foods, especially raw or non-processed, contain higher levels of beta carotene, vitamins C, D and E, health-promoting polyphenols, cancer-fighting antioxidants, flavonoids that help ward off heart disease, essential fatty acids, and essential minerals.

On the average, organic food is 25% more nutritious in terms of vitamins and minerals than products derived from industrial agriculture. Since on the average, organic food’s shelf price is only 20% higher than chemical food, this makes it actually cheaper, gram for gram, than chemical food, even ignoring the astronomical hidden costs (damage to health, climate, environment, and government subsidies) of industrial food production. Levels of antioxidants in milk from organic cattle are between 50% and 80% higher than normal milk. Organic wheat, tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage, onions and lettuce have between 20% and 40% more nutrients than non-organic foods.

Organic food contains qualitatively higher levels of essential minerals (such as calcium, magnesium, iron and  chromium), that are severely depleted in chemical foods grown on pesticide and nitrate fertilizer-abused soil. UK and US government statistics indicate that levels of trace minerals in (non-organic) fruit and vegetables fell by up to 76% between 1940 and 1991.

Organic Food is Pure Food, Free of Chemical Additives
Organic food doesn’t contain food additives, flavor enhancers (like MSG), artificial sweeteners (like aspartame and high-fructose corn syrup), contaminants (like mercury) or preservatives (like sodium nitrate), that can cause health problems.

Eating organic has the potential to lower the incidence of autism, learning disorders, diabetes, cancer, coronary heart disease, allergies, osteoporosis, migraines, dementia, and hyperactivity.

Organic Food Is Safer
Organic food doesn’t contain pesticides. More than 400 chemical pesticides are routinely used in conventional farming and residues remain on non-organic food even after washing. Children are especially vulnerable to pesticide exposure. One class of pesticides, endocrine disruptors, are likely responsible for early puberty and breast cancer. Pesticides are linked to asthma and cancer.

Organic food isn’t genetically modified. Under organic standards, genetically modified (GM) crops and ingredients are prohibited.

Organic animals aren’t given drugs. Organic farming standards prohibit the use of antibiotics, growth hormones and genetically modified vaccines in farm animals. Hormone-laced beef and dairy consumption is correlated with increased rates of breast, testis and prostate cancers.

Organic animals aren’t fed animal remains or slaughterhouse waste, blood, or manure. Eating organic reduces the risks of CJD, the human version of mad cow disease, as well as Alzheimer’s.

Organic animals aren’t fed arsenic.

Organic animals aren’t fed byproducts of corn ethanol production (which increases the rate of E. coli contamination).

Organic crops aren’t fertilized with toxic sewage sludge or coal waste, or irrigated with E. coli contaminated sewage water.

Organic food isn’t irradiated. Cats fed a diet of irradiated food got multiple sclerosis within 3-4 months.

Organic food contains less illness-inducing bacteria. Organic chicken is free of salmonella and has a reduced incidence of campylobacter.

Organic Food Contains No Hidden Costs
As taxpayers, we pay for the hidden health and environmental costs of industrial agricultural. These include the pollution of our drinking water with pesticides, fertilizer and animal waste from conventional farms.

Organic Food Is Certified to High Standards
Organic food comes from trusted sources that are inspected to ensure compliance with the rigorous organic standards.

Organic Food Protects Animal Welfare
Organic methods provide for animals. Animal welfare is taken very seriously under organic standards.

Organic Food Is Good for the Planet
Organic food is good for wildlife and the environment. Organic farming is better for wildlife, causes less pollution and waste, and produces fewer global warming gases.

Organic Food Tastes Better
Organic food is more flavorful. Many people prefer organic food because they say it tastes better.

HOW TO IDENTIFY REAL ORGANIC FOOD
Look for the USDA Organic Seal or the Words “Made With Organic Ingredients”. When you see the USDA Organic seal, you know that the food is at least 95% organic, does not contain genetically modified organisms, was not irradiated, and comes from a farm that:

- Employs positive soil building, conservation, manure management and crop rotation practices.
- Provides outdoor access and pasture for livestock.
- Refrains from antibiotic and hormone use in animals.
- Sustains animals on 100% organic feed.
- Keeps records of all operations.
- Is inspected annually by an accredited Third-Party Organic Certifier.
If it is a multi-ingredient product, it was made at a certified organic processing plant that takes strict measures to avoid contamination of organic products.

Products that are “Made With Organic Ingredients” are at least 70% organic and are also free of genetically modified organisms and food irradiation.

You can subscribe to OCA’s Organic Bytes newletter here.
