No Gluten Added Wine Dinner at Bistro AIX, August 31

With a mouthwatering menu and perfectly paired wines, local restaurant Bistro Aix prepares to host their 1st ever “No Gluten Added” Wine Dinner in conjunction with Gluten-Free Jacksonville on August 31st at 6pm. As a local Natural Foods store, it’s wonderful to see such enthusiastic support and awareness for gluten-free foods! We look forward to the continued growth of the gluten-free diet within the Jacksonville community.

Join us On Wednesday, August 31st for the first ever “No Gluten Added” (NGA) Wine Dinner at Bistro AIX!

As the interest and demand for NGA menu items continue to grow among our Bistro AIX guests, we are very pleased to announce this special dinner, hosted in conjunction with Gluten-Free Jacksonville.

The dinner, held in our beautiful private dining rooms, will include:

Local Grape Tomato & Watermelon Salad, Micro Basil & Parmesan Crisp with Solo Pinot Grigio from Italy.

Local Grilled Fish (to be determined based on the day’s catch) with Chanterelles, Local Sweet Corn, Pole Beans & Paprika Butter with CHUCKER (Red Blend), Happy Canyon appellation, California.

Dessert will be a beautiful Banana Pineapple Cake with Vanilla Cream.

On average, walkthroughs typically last for an hour and thirty minutes as dictated by customer need. You can expect to leave a walkthrough armed with a newfound confidence in your diet and a better understanding of how to read and interpret labels. We also provide personal product recommendations and introduce our allergen tagging system.

Recipe: Pumpkin Spice Whoopie Pies (NGA)

Our delicious GF Pumpkin Spice Whoopie Pies from the Native Sun Bakery are featured in this month’s issue of Jacksonville Magazine just in time for the holidays! Pick up a copy in-store* or use the recipe below. Enjoy!

PUMPKIN WHOOPIE PIES
3 c. Any Gluten-Free Flour Blend
1 t. Baking Powder
1 t. Baking Soda
2 T. Organic Cinnamon
1 T. Organic Ginger
1 T. Organic Cloves
½ t. Organic Nutmeg
2-1/4 t. Xanthan gum
2 c. Organic Dark Brown Sugar
1 c. Organic Canola Oil
3 c. Chilled Pumpkin Puree
1 t. Gluten-Free Vanilla Extract
2 Large Eggs
1 t. Sea Salt

SPICED CRÈAM CHEESE FILLING
4 oz. Organic Unsalted Butter
8 oz. Organic Cream Cheese
1 tsp. Gluten-Free Vanilla Extract
16 oz. Organic Powdered Sugar
1 tsp. Organic Pumpkin Pie Spice
Dash Sea Salt

DIRECTIONS
For the Whoopie Pies: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, nutmeg and xanthan gum in a large bowl and set aside. In another bowl, use a whisk to stir brown sugar and oil until there are no visible lumps. Add pumpkin puree and blend well, then stir in eggs and vanilla. Now, gradually add flour mixture to puree mixture and blend well. Using a heaping tablespoon, drop pie batter onto parchment lined baking sheets. Bake for approximately 10 minutes.

For the Cream Cheese Filling: Combine butter and cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Add powdered sugar, dash of salt, pumpkin pie spice and 1 tsp. vanilla extract. Blend until smooth and creamy.

Use a tablespoon to place the Spiced Cream Cheese Filling on the flat side of one Pumpkin Whoopie Pie and press second Whoopie Pie on top forming a sandwich.

Please help me welcome our Gluten-Free Carrot Cupcake (new recipe!) with Cream Cheese Frosting and Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cupcake with Buttercream Frosting to the Native Sun menu! Cupcakes are $3.59 each and can be found in the grab & go cooler by the Deli. Selections may vary between stores.

In addition to new items, we also have a new baker!

Marisa Carta has been with Native Sun Natural Foods Market since 2008 as an Art Director in our Design Department. During that time she was also the office baker bringing in goodies for our monthly birthday parties and special events – including wedding cakes for two Native Sun employees! Her personal passion for baking made her an ideal candidate to take our Gluten-Free Bakery to the next level.

Marisa has been working with our resident “Gluten-Free Guru” Ginny Nehring, Native Sun’s Food Education Coordinator, to learn all of our classic recipes and develop new and exciting ones that will be coming out soon.

All-Natural Delicatessen at Baymeadows Store

We now offers fresh, all-natural sliced meat and cheese in a new Delicatessen section of the Baymeadows Store Deli. You can choose from Thumann’s all-natural meats and Andrew & Everett premium natural cheeses available by the pound or sliced for deli fresh sandwiches.

Thumann’s meats contain NO antibiotics, growth hormones, nitrates, nitrites, fillers, MSG or artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. Their products come from livestock that are raised in stress free conditions and their meats are low in salt, trans-fat free and safe for individuals with dairy and gluten allergies. In fact, Thumann’s is the first deli company to be certified gluten free!

In addition, Native Sun owner Aaron Gottlieb requested Thumann’s prepare their roast turkey without cottonseed oil. This is done only for Native Sun and cannot be found at any other store. According to Gottlieb, cottonseed oil is one of the most genetically-modified oils around and therefore does not meet Native Sun’s standards.

Andrew & Everett cheeses are source verified from farm to table using natural ingredients and processing including rBGH-BST Hormone Free Pasteurized Milk. [rBGH is a harmful, synthetic, genetically-engineered version of a cow’s natural growth hormone that is injected into some cows to increase milk production beyond normal standards.]
