The Vermillion Snapper (Bee-Liner Snapper) season officially opened on January 1st 2012.  The quota for Vermillion harvest has been reduced this year to under half a million pounds gutted weight. While unfavorable to local fishing industries, conservationists and environmentalists welcome the quota reduction as a means of demonstrating the growing sustainability of the South Atlantic Snapper fisheries.

Vermillion Snapper contains a moderate to low concentration of mercury when compared to canned Albacore Tuna and Swordfish. Although typically between ten and eighteen inches in length and weighing anywhere from one to three pounds, Vermillion Snapper can reach lengths of up to twenty-four inches and weights of nearly four pounds. Low in saturated fat and sodium, with a soft, flaky flesh that provides essential fatty acids and protein, Vermillion Snapper closely resembles Red Snapper. The Sulzbacher Center seeks to “empower homeless and at-risk men, women and children to achieve a better life through a full range of services, both direct and in collaboration with community partners,” that allow them to successfully reintegrate into the community (1). As Northeast Florida’s “only provider of comprehensive services for homeless men, women, and children,” the Sulzbacher Center provides food and shelter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year (1). Through job placement assistance and life skills programs, Sulzbacher provides those in need with the resources necessary to transform their lives.

The Sulzbacher Center relies on the strength and generosity of businesses, religious groups, civic organizations, and individual volunteers throughout the community for support in feeding and sheltering some of Jacksonville’s most needy residents. The other day, our Baymeadows produce manager poked her head in the door to let me know that we had just received a shipment of turmeric root and she wanted to get the word out because we don’t get it in stock all that often. I wasn’t sure if I had eaten turmeric before, but I was positive that I had never seen it. In order to remedy this situation, we decided to grab some turmeric and set up a photo shoot. As you can see from the picture above, there are certainly more visually appealing foods, but since turmeric is a root, I’m going to forgive its gnarled appearance and focus on its health benefits.
