The other day, our Baymeadows produce manager poked her head in the door to let me know that we had just received a shipment of turmeric root and she wanted to get the word out because we don’t get it in stock all that often. I wasn’t sure if I had eaten turmeric before, but I was positive that I had never seen it. In order to remedy this situation, we decided to grab some turmeric and set up a photo shoot. As you can see from the picture above, there are certainly more visually appealing foods, but since turmeric is a root, I’m going to forgive its gnarled appearance and focus on its health benefits.
So, what’s so great about turmeric? Well, curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric demonstrates anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that could be beneficial in the treatment of the following diseases and conditions*:
- Heart Disease
- Chronic Pain and Arthritis
- Depression, Dementia, and other Brain Disorders
- Digestive Disorders
- Obesity, Multiple Sclerosis, and Immune System Compromises
In the kitchen, turmeric typically makes itself at home in curries and other Indian style dishes, but works well with all kinds of flavors. If you’re interested in spicing up some of your favorite dishes or trying out some new recipes, swing by Native Sun Baymeadows and pick up some fresh turmeric!
Note: Fresh Turmeric subject to availability. Priced at $12.99/lb.
